Ken Krenzel: A True New York Card Man

Ken Krenzel, one of New York City's most reputable card magicians for the last 50 years has passed away.

A staunch supporter of Tannen's Magic, Ken even published his first effect, It Can't Be, with Tannen's in 1958. Ken's work has been recognized as being highly influential to the field of card magic all over the world. Two of Ken's six books are still in print, Card Classics of Ken Krenzel and Relaxed Impossibilities.

Magician's On Screen Exhibit: Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria

The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria has recently introduced a new series which is running through January 1st, 2012 called Magicians on Screen.

In the 1890s, stage magicians were the world’s most popular entertainers. And then the cinema was invented. Always eager to incorporate new technologies, magicians quickly embraced the moving image, using it to create astonishing new illusions. Magician/filmmakers like Georges Méliès furthered cinema’s potential to make the impossible appear possible through their innovative use of editing and special effects in the genre they invented, the trick film. Unfortunately, as audiences fell in love with the movies, they abandoned the stage magicians, and the grand old magic halls disappeared or were converted to movie palaces.

There will be a screening of The Great Buck Howard (A film based on the life of the much acclaimed mind-reader, The Amazing Kreskin) on December 31st, free with admission. Along with the museum exhibit, the Wall Street Journal interviewed magic legend Ricky Jay on the history of magic in film, a very interesting read and definitely worth checking out.

Darwin Ortiz lectured for a very enthusiastic sold-out house last night at Tannen's Magic.

It was great to have Darwin back in New York City! He performed a stellar lecture on card magic, including some very commercial routines that have floored his audiences for the past two decades. He shared a wonderful anecdote with the crowd about his first time at Tannen's Magic. Darwin emphasized the importance of making your magic strong and direct, points which are further discussed in his two books Strong Magic and Designing Miracles.

Tannen's Magic Campers' Dueling Card Restorations!

Two current Tannen's Magic Campers have just released two very different Torn & Restored Card (T & R) Tricks to the magic marketplace!

Reuben Moreland is a former Tannen's intern who is now perusing an undergraduate education at the University of Cincinnati. He recently published Fourfit, a piece by piece restoration of a playing card based on an original concept from another Magic Camper, Max Cron. Reuben has been very busy over the last year competing in international magic competitions with an act that led Mac King to say, "Reuben Moreland is my favorite young manipulator."

Jeff Prace is a Chicago based magician who has put out a number of great tricks including the hit effect Gum. Jeff's new T & R, Fuze, is a very interesting twist on the standard plot. In Fuze the corner of a signed card is ripped off and initialed and then instantly restored.

We can't take all the credit for these two, but we'll take some, and we're thrilled to have both Reuben and Jeff back this summer for Tannen's Magic Camp 2012 (July 7th - 14th). Keep your eye on these two as we're sure they'll continue innovating through their pioneering ideas and original effects.

Tannen's intern Jeffrey Limoncelli and employee Ben Nemzer spent some time interviewing the crowd in Zuccotti Park about the Occupy Wall Street movement. During their investigation they discover what the movement represents to different groups of protestors.

Last night we were honored to have Mark Wilson and his beautiful wife Nani Darnell lecture for us!

The packed room was buzzing with energy as guests from all over the country listened to every word their childhood hero had to say.

Mark showed us some great tricks out of his Complete Course in Magic including a devious rope knot and a sucker version of the torn and restored napkin. He told us stories about how he would pitch his magic to the early television stations. Then using his hit television program as his platform he'd highlight the greatest magicians of the time like Dai Vernon and Jay Marshall, giving them the opportunity to perform on TV.

We had an amazing time last week at MAGIC Live in Las Vegas! While showing in the dealers room we premiered several great effects to the magic community.

Without a doubt, L.I.F.T. by Jack Reimon set the convention abuzz. L.I.F.T. an acronym for Live Impromptu Floating Table, is a table levitation that can be done with any table at any time. Pictured above is Tannen's demonstrator, Jared Molten, demonstrating L.I.F.T. for the legendary Johnny Thompson!

Along with the Great Tomsoni we sat down and showed L.I.F.T. to Jeff McBride, Chris Kenner, Michael Weber, Barrie Richardson, Mathieu Bich, Garrett Thomas, Martin Lewis and even Losander bought a copy of the book!

The PLF Mentalism effects were also a HUGE convention hit! Magicians from all over the world couldn't wait to see the ParaPad, Depicting Thoughts Set and PLF Marked ESP Collection demonstrated.

All in all the convention was an absolute blast, we're looking forward to showing again at the next one!

This past week we enjoyed one of the most AMAZING Tannen's Magic Camps of all time!

The local CBS morning show came to visit us and see our magic. They wrote a story about the camp and even filmed several segments that aired live on TV!

That was only part of the fun! This year we had some extraordinarily special guests come to teach the campers. The legendary Johnny Thompson performed and lectured on the Malini Egg Bag. The Millionaire's Magician, Steve Cohen, visited us and performed his highly esteemed evening show for the campers. Eric DeCamps and Meir Yedid got the camp off to a rolling start performing their excellent close-up magic on the opening night of camp.

Alex Pandrea, Doug McKenzie, Ricky Smith and Dan Hauss joined our older campers for late-night close-up magic jam sessions.

We can't wait to see what will happen next summer...

Giobbi was Incredible! A true Maestro!

New Yorkers were enthralled by Roberto Giobbi's lecture last night, his Homage to Dai Vernon.

From the Cups and Balls to Vernon's Poker Deal and the classic Linking Rings, Roberto not only showed us why Vernon's legacy is so great but analyzed every move, gesture and line. Roberto brought in video clips of Vernon which were played throughout the lecture. After each video he would demonstrate the ins and outs of what made that routine so great in Vernon's hands.

For a close-up kinda guy, this lecture was priceless. Non-stop fun and interesting anecdotes that encapsulated the life and magic of Dai Vernon.

On the day before the lecture Roberto hosted a full-day workshop, the Card College Seminar, which was also absolutely fantastic. Fifteen students from all walks of New York life joined us for the workshop which focused entirely on card magic. After a full day with Roberto Giobbi one couldn't help but feel inspired.

Wayne Houchin killed last night!

Wayne Houchin was incredible at his sold-out lecture here last night! He performed and explained his more popular effects like Thread, Stigmata and Sinful and even showed us a few things that he hasn't published including a great broken and restored match.

One of the highlights of the lecture was his his finale. He showed us how he ends his stage show by performing a masterful rendition of the classic needle swallow.

All in all, Wayne was spot-on last night and we enjoyed having him very much!

Random Events is a meet up group that focuses on bringing people together to do... well... random things! Two former Tannen's Magic Campers were recognized for outstanding contributions in their field this past week.

Michael Grasso, who was just seen on America's Got Talent, made the cover of November's MAGIC Magazine. The article, by Rory Johnston, highlighted the AGT experience and how performers prepare for the show. It's a very interesting read and definitely worth checking out.

Resident New York City comedian and current magic camp counselor, Harrison Greenbaum, was recently presented with the Andy Kaufman award. The award was created by Andy Kaufman's father and, "honors Andy Kaufman's creative spirit while simultaneously shining a spotlight on promising performers with the potential to impact the evolving culture of comedy."

New Yorkers! Here is a great weekend activity for you and your families. Make Believe, a documentary about teen competitors in the World Magic Seminar (WMS) is premiering at the IFC in Greenwich Village on Sunday, November 7th, 2010 at 3:30PM.

The film, which has won critical acclaim at festivals around the country, is being shown as part of DOC NYC, a new documentary festival in Manhattan.

Mark Mason came and lectured for us here at Tannen's this past Wednesday night. The lecture went great! The crowd really enjoyed Mark's routines and his handling on some of magics classic ideas.

We were very impressed with Mark's SOLO, a killer card sandwich routine. We also loved seeing him perform CoinFlux, a matrix routine you can do with one hand!

America's Got Talent Auditions in NYC!

Over the past four years the hit television show, America's Got Talent, has allowed magicians from all over the country to share their unique skills and creativity.

In the past, New York City's own, Elliot Zimet, a former Tannen's Magic Camper and current Tannen's customer made it to the semi-finals. Now is your chance to join the ranks of America's Got Talent finalists and show the rest of the country the great magic that thrives here in New York City.

Shane Gillen Lays the Cards Down for Kelsey Grammer

Shane Gillen, 22, is an Irish entertainer with his expertise lying in card and mind magic. Shane is in New York City this summer to perform his street magic.

He visited us at the shop last week stocking up on some supplies and said that he was going to perform magic for the actor Kelsey Grammer, famous from TV sitcoms such as Cheers and Frasier, at his home. Well he did!

Conrad Colon: Somerset County 4-H Fair

Tannen's Magic camper, Conrad Colon performs all next week at the Somerset County 4-H Fair at North Branch Park in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The fair runs Wednesday, August 11- Friday, August 13, 2010. Everyday he will be the MC for the 4H Magician's Guild during their show in the prep tent from 2:00pm until 2:30pm, and from 3:00pm until 4:00pm he will be doing close-up magic in the Art's tent. On Friday the 13 Conrad will present his show in the Clover Theater from 11:00am-12:00pm. Come to the show, enjoy the fun, and experience the wonder.

Conrad had his first experience with magic at the age of three when his Godfather, showed him a card trick. He soon caught the magic bug and began to perfect the simple trick. His father gave him his "First Magic Set” as a gift and he mastered every trick in the set by the age of 4. His appetite for magic grew even more after attending several magic shows sponsored by the Hillsborough High School Magic Club. From that moment on, Conrad was hooked, and devoted his time to learning everything he could about the art. reed spool prefers his name in the lower case. it looks better. he is currently attending umass lowell class of '014, majoring in computer science. reed is a magician, artist, amateur programmer, and all around cool kid.

reed started magic at the age of 14, when a mysterious masked man at a halloween party showed him a coin trick. reed proceded to spend way too much time practicing. things got serious in '07, when he took the first of his two consecutive first place awards at Tannen's Magic Camp's annual competition. now-a-days, reed enjoys performing whenever possible in a variety of venues. to date, reed has performed with a disproportionate amount of belly dancers.

reed was born on april 2, 1990 and raised in andover, massachusetts. since then he has been, at an inconsistant pace, growing older, larger, and wiser. in the spring of '08, reed failed to graduate high school. in the fall, reed joined AmeriCorps*NCCC, a 10 month national service program for 18-24 year olds. at the end of a crazy year of service, he completed his GED, and moved back home for a year. at the moment, reed is excited to start studying at umass lowell in the fall.

Magician Anthony Jones, 16, shows some of his card tricks near the Ocala Square on Friday, June 25, 2010. Jones is attending the Tannen's Magic Camp from July 10 to 17 in Penn., on a rare full tuition scholarship awarded by the Society of American Magicians. "He drinks, sleeps, walks and talks magic," said his aunt, Katie Dudley. "I feel we will see him in Vegas. He'll be one of the 'biggies'".

He's always in motion, and you'll want to watch his hands very carefully.

Anthony Jones, 16, flicks his wrist, hurriedly pushes up his sleeves, and constantly twitches his fingers in anticipation. But if you happen to blink, you may miss the trick.

Jones is a close-up magician, also known as an illusionist, whose favorite part of any trick is hearing the delighted gasps of the crowd.

“Oh my gosh! How do you do that?” said an astonished Kacy Stebbins, an employee at En.Ve Salon and Spa.

Jones stops by his favorite salon several times a week to practice tricks. The salon provides him with a captive audience of customers - and gushing female staffers.

“It's something we've never seen before and it makes our day go by faster,” said Christina Baker, a hairdresser who crafts Jones' bleached faux-mohawk. “You have to watch this kid.”

Jones became interested in magic at age 6 after seeing a performance by magician Rick Thomas in Las Vegas. He started watching videos and dabbling with hidden coins under shells.

Now he specializes in tricks with cards, money, rings and rubber bands. Most tricks take only a day or two to master, but a recently-learned card trick took almost six months.

He said he prefers giving impromptu performances at restaurants or shopping centers, using a fork or napkin, so he doesn't have to carry around as much stuff.

“I'll use pretty much anything I can pick up,” he said.

Originally from Virginia Beach, Vir., Jones has lived in Ocala for the past three years with his biggest fan and supporter, his aunt Kathie Dudley.

“He is so advanced and the way he manipulates cards is impressive. I can't even shuffle,” she said. “We go to the mall and I turn around and he has a crowd. He drinks, sleeps, walks and talks magic.”

Jones is so captivating he was one of three applicants selected, from the 25 who applied, for a scholarship from the Society of American Magicians to attend the Tannen's Magic Camp in Pennslyvania from July 10-17.

Warren Kaps, a trustee and past society president, said Jones' application stood out because of numerous recommendations from local magicians and the Tampa Bay Magic Club.

“We don't want somebody who is into magic this week, stamps next week, baseball the next. We want someone to get good experience,” Kaps said.

He said the scholarship, worth $1,195, and which comes with a $250 travel stipend, is part of the society's Magic Endowment Fund, which was created 19 years ago to advance magic among children.

The society itself is 108-years-old, and Kaps said he didn't recall any other resident from Marion County receiving the scholarship.

“They only look for the most promising young people. This was the first person we felt was young enough and worthy enough for the position,” said Mark Byrne, president of the Tampa Bay Magic Club.

“He goes out and does his magic on a daily basis. He's not afraid to perform in front of people and is always testing new stuff,” he said.

Byrne said the club is more than 60 years old and currently has over 140 members. He said the camp will provide the proper exposure to start Jones' career.

“He'll get a tremendous amount of networking out of it, with magicians across the country. If you shine there, those people tend to remember you. He's a really good looking kid, and people want to watch other people with skills, personality, and [who] look good on stage,” he said.

Camp Director Terri Cook said the magic camp, in its' 36th year, teaches up to 110 students between the ages of 7 and 20.

“We are the only camp of its kind. We have classes in the morning, lectures and workshop in the afternoon and performances at night. It is so intense you could almost call us a school, but you can't because its overnight. There are no sports, just magic, magic, magic,” said Cook.

She said the camp teaches students how to pick a routine and be comfortable in front of an audience, and also features a special class that explains how to perform at kids shows for certain age levels, how to keep in control of the children, and how to talk to the parents.

“A third of the staff are professional magicians making their income on magic, and the teachers even explain what they use in their acts,” she said. “Most of the kids that come, repeat. Because they realize there are another hundred kids who get what they are into. Students from 15 years ago still stay in contact with those they met at camp,”

Cook said famous performers from all over the country sometimes stop by, such as David Copperfield, Criss Angel and David Blaine.

“Performers will call to participate because it's a gift to perform in front of the energy of these kids,” she said.

Cook would not confirm or deny any celebrity acts for this year.

Cook said the camp encourages finishing school or getting a degree, as most students will not become professional magicians.

“In college, it's a gift to be able to work a couple of hours a week [doing magic] instead of a full-time job. Lawyers will even use it during a trial to relax the jury or have a moment with the judge. It's a great little tool and could make the difference on a resume or getting into college,” she said.

Byrne said he expects great things from Jones, with or without attending the camp.

“He puts in a lot of practice and specializes in close-up magic, which requires lots of manual dexterity. Close-up magic is one of the more difficult ones, because it is right in front of their noses.

“He's constantly blowing me away, I don't even try to figure it out anymore. I say, ‘That looks good, thanks,' I don't let on that I don't know,” he said.

Dudley proudly agrees.

“He is going to go far with this. I feel we will see him in Vegas. He'll be one of the ‘biggies.' ”

Dove from iPad: Uchida Shinya

Uchida Shinya, a Japanese magician, started using the Apple iPad in his street magic show has become a huge online hit.

Shinya uses a mix of pre-programmed clips and props in his tricks which include producing a dove out the the tablet device. You see a picture of the bird on the screen then, after a tilt, it flies out and lands on his hand. How'd he do it?

Filmed outside a Apple store in Tokyo, he also creates smoke from the screen and then 'connects' with a friend who bends a fork via the power of the iPad.

A video of his his tricks - based around a theme of communication - has already been viewed over 1 million times online. But no matter how hard he tries, Shinya will have not be able to improve on the Steve Jobs trick of getting people to pay $500 for an iPad.

Sherie Rene Scott is nominated for a Tony for Performance by a Leading Actress in the musical "Everyday Rapture." (She is also nominated for having co-written the book with her friend Dick Scanlan.) "Everyday Rapture" semi-autobiographically chronicles Ms. Scott's rise from Broadway Baby to sort-of-recognizable star on the Great White Way.

Also in the show, Ms. Scott describes meeting Ray Nordini on her first trip to New York when she was a teenager at the TKTS booth. The Great Nordini, as he liked to call himself, was a magician and took Ms. Scott to a strange magic shop in an office building in midtown. Ms. Scott hasn't been back there since the early '80s.

But on a recent day off from the show, she trekked with a reporter to Tannen's Magic Store, a little hole in the wall on the sixth floor of 45 W. 34th St. When she got there, Ms. Scott explained to the proprietor that the magician who had come to prep her for "Everyday Rapture" thought the Great Nordini must have taken her to Tannen's.

Getting tied in endless amounts of rope and chain, escaping from tiny locked boxes, and suspending himself upside-down while high in the air in a straightjacket are but a few of the many talents of Jason Escape. Everything he does is designed to make you laugh, if not freak you right out. His live performances never fail to render his audiences truly awestruck.

Growing up right outside of NYC afforded Jason the opportunity to see many of the great modern magicians, such as David Copperfield, Doug Henning and Penn & Teller. Jason's grandfather would take him to see these awesome magicians, and after would present him with a simple magic trick to learn. Jason studied and practiced constantly. Magic and escape required not only manual dexterity but a challenge to his mind as well. Jason spent his days bound by rope to chairs, making objects vanish, and even reading his cat's mind.

Now as an adult, his passion has never waned; it's even matured and grown. He shares his art and has brought smiles, laughter, thrills and amazement to audiences all over the world.

Asi Wind is from New York by way of Israel. He is a magician who has honed his craft all over the world. Magic in the Park is a magical journey and entertainment showcase that pays homage to the late Dr. Abraham B. Hurwitz, New York City’s “Official Magician”. Continuing in the tradition of his legendary “Peter Pan the Magic Man” shows, Magic in the Park features magic and mental acts, juggling, ventriloquism, puppetry, music, and much more.

Hurwitz was a Yeshiva University education professor who was so deft and admired at his magic act that he was named New York City's "official magician" by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

Dr. Hurwitz was a city recreation director when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia gave him the official magician title during the Depression. For 18 years, he took his magic show to schools and recreation centers and put on annual magic shows in parks in every borough. For years after he left the department he continued his magic shows as a volunteer. Among his proteges was his daughter, Shari Lewis, the world famous ventriloquist and developer of Lamb Chop.

Abe Hurwitz was born in Lithuania in 1906. He graduated from City College of New York, got his master's degree from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in educational guidance from New York University. He began mixing magic with teaching as a guidance counselor at the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphanage. He retired from Yeshiva in 1974. He died September 29, 1981.

The New York Times, in 1981, wrote that Hurwitz “entertained more than a million young people” at free performances in New York City’s schools, parks, recreation centers and playgrounds.

The Bullets:

Josh always loved being in the spotlight and found his niche with magic.

He earned the nickname Card Boy, doing tricks for friends and teachers in middle and high school. His nickname followed him to college where he was known as Card Man, entertaining co-eds at parties on campus. Though entertaining was his dream, he majored in business just in case.

After graduation, he moved to New York City where he tried his hand at stand up comedy. Unfortunately, that wasn't paying the bills so he got a job in finance but continued to entertain at parties and charity events in the evening.

It took four years, but Josh made a name for himself and was able to quit his day job to focus exclusively on his career as a full time magician/entertainer.

Keys to Success: Confidence and persistence.

First step: If you're new to the trade, learn some tricks and try them out on friends and family. Tannen's Magic Shop is a great place to start. If you're ready to get that first job, contact event planners to see if they're in the market for an entertainer.

Colbert Report: Health Care Magic

Stephen Colbert performs magic tricks such as the classic Cups and Balls, flash paper, and the Vanishing Ketchup Bottle to show how the Democrats are trying to pass health care reform.

The Colbert Report is a spin-off from and counterpart to The Daily Show that comments on politics and the media in a similar way. It satirizes conservative personality-driven political pundit programs, particularly Fox News' and The O'Reilly Factor. The show focuses on a fictional anchorman character named Stephen Colbert, played by his real-life namesake. The character, described by Colbert as a "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot", is a caricature of televised political pundits.

Larry Willmore had a comedy bit on The Daily Show With John Stewart last year (see blog here) stopped at our store to get some new magic tricks. He said "The Daily Show's magic is far better than the The Colbert Report". Let the battle begin.

Two Primo Italian Magicians

This week at our store in New York City we had a visit by two famous Italians magicians Andrew Basso and Alessandro Politi. Both stopped by and did some serious shopping before heading out to the World Magic Seminar starting this Sunday in Las Vegas.

The WMS is the premier convention for both professional and amateur magicians sponsored by world famous magicians Siegfried and Roy. The WMS began 32 years ago as the Desert Magic Seminar and is held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to the seminar, Lance Burton hosts a special week-end event is held for teen magicians.

Andrew Basso, 24, is from Trento, Italy is considered "One of the younger and most successful escape artist in the world".

Engaged in over 120 live shows every year, Andrew is currently leading the Italian television programme "Street Magic" where he puts his abilities to the test, in real settings, "on the road", improvising with the public his incredible magic and illusion experiments and his breathtaking escapes.

Andrew has already accomplished dozens of stunts, including:
THE COFFIN OF DEATH: Andrew has only seconds to free himself from a coffin with explosives before a car drives into it at 80 mile per hour.
THE UNDERWATER CELL: Andrew is chained and locked in a cell that is lowered underwater and has to hold his breath and escape before drowning.
ESCAPE AT 40 METERS HEIGHT: hanging head-down from a crane, 130 feet away from the ground, bound in a real straight-jacket, Andrew performed this air escape in record time!

Alessandro Politi, 33, from Savignano sul Rubicon, Italy is a comedian, cabaret artist and actor. He was named Italian Magician and Comic of the Year in 2006.

He is most famous for his portrayal of a weird Scottish magician Martin Scozzese, that calls himself the "Grande Mago" (Big Magician). Alessandro holds the Guinness Book of World Record for the greatest number of magic tricks presented underwater for an audience. Check out this hysterical video.

Instead of Abracadabra (Istället for Abrakadabra) was nominated for a 2010 Oscar at the Academy Awards for best Short Film (Live Action). This short film written and directed by Patrik Eklund is about a young man who dreams of becoming a magician, while his exasperated father wishes he would find himself a job.

The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2008, where it won the short film prize Startsladden, worth about $140,000 and the honorary prize as audience choice. The film was shot in Piteå, Sweden in the autumn of 2007.

Tannen's Magic, New York's leading magic shop will be changing the hours of operation of our store to make life easier for our customers. The change will officially begin on Monday, February 1st. The change will move our opening store time to weekdays at 11:00 AM while extending the closing time until 6:00 PM. The weekend hours will remain the same from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

David Blaine: Haiti Relief and Development

On January 12, a series of earthquakes measuring 6.5 to 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated Haiti. The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.

David Blaine will be in Times Square between 43rd and 44th St - intersection of 7th Ave and Broadway starting at 9am today Friday, January 15 ,2010 fundraising for earthquake relief in Haiti, staying awake for 72 hours performing live close-up magic with the American Red Cross.

Michael Patrick, Tannen's Magic's awesome demonstrator and Magic Camp icon, is featured in the current Reel Magic #14.

Reel Magic is the "hot" new juicy video magazine with interviews, columns, tricks and review of all that is magic. Our staff his very high on this magazine of the future.

In this issue Michael Patrick preforms "Cointality" in the Move Monkey portion of the magazine. It is a sequence that can be used at the beginning or ending of any three coin routine. Michael performs and explains this in detail in this month's issue.

Tannen's Magic 27th "Louie Award" to Paul Harris

We are pleased to present Tannen's Magic 27th "Louie Award" to Paul Harris an inventor, magician, and writer. Described by the magic magazine Genii as "the most innovative magic mind of our day," Harris is listed in Magic Magazine as one of "the 100 who shaped the art of magic in America".

Magic Magazine states that "the feats of astonishments that Paul creates and teaches are in the repertoires of a multitude of working pros".

He has invented many original tricks including: "Linking Playing Cards", "Bizarre Twist", "a Solid Deck", a torn and restored card effect, coins materializing from mirrors, a card that appears to turn ninety degrees when pushed into the pack, and a torn and restored quarter.

Amongst the magicians who are known to have presented Paul Harris creations are David Copperfield and Doug Henning. In the field of card and close-up magic, Paul Harris more or less re-innovated the genre during the 1970-80s, and is held in very high regard among magicians in the western world.

Doug Henning performed a routine called "Twilight" on his third TV special in 1977. An effect using a coin and a mirror where the mirror image of the coin becomes real. A surreal piece.

David Copperfield in a 1984 special (the one where he made the Statue of Liberty disappear) performed a linking card effect "The Immaculate Connection." In this routine, the magician tears holes in the center of three playing cards in order to create three "frames." The illusion consists in causing the frames to appear to link and unlink without damaging any of the cards. At the conclusion, the cards are sometimes passed for inspection; to all appearances no extra cards or gimmicks are employed.

Harris has performed at the Dunes Hotel and at other locations on the Las Vegas Strip and was a technical advisor for David Blaine's Magic Man and Street Magic TV shows. He also contributed writing to the 1987 film Nice Girls Don't Explode, which starred Starring Michelle Meyrink, William O'Leary, Wallace Shawn, James Nardini, and Margot Gray--with special appearances by Dana Betz and Keith Knauer.

In 2006, Paul received the "Creative Fellowship" honor from The Board of Trustees of the Academy of Magical Arts.

In late 2008 Paul put out the True Astonishment Box Set: 9-DVDs. True Astonishments is Paul Harris' current, definitive, and final legacy. This is a monumental project of the highest caliber from the production to the material... it's simple, elegant, practical, and beautiful. True Astonishments is one of the most important projects to be released in the last 30 years.

Currently Paul is developing products by other magicians, sometimes in coordination with Paul and marketed under the "Paul Harris Presents" product line.

On a phone call accepting the "Louie" from Thailand, Paul said "My Mom would be very proud".
