Play Dead: Directed and Co-Written by Teller, Begins Previews Off-Broadway in October

Teller (of Penn & Teller) and Todd Robbins invite Death out to play in Play Dead, a new spirit-shaking Off-Broadway show that explores themes of death, darkness and deception. As the guide for the evening, Todd Robbins draws audiences into an unknown haunted world full of frightful surprises and diabolical laughter. Although very much a theatrical work, it is hardly a typical "play," but rather a dramatic, unnerving thriller - here and now in an "abandoned" theater, illuminated by a single ghostlight - in which audiences test their nerves and face their fears as they are surrounded by ethereal sights, sounds and even touches of the returning dead - all achieved by wry, suspenseful storytelling and uncanny stage illusions.

Show Opens:
October 21, 2010

Ticket Price: $39.50-$59.50

Borders of The Mind: Joshua Kane

Mentalist Joshua Kane is coming to Westport with "Borders of the Mind: The Psychic Show for the Whole Family" on Thursday, July 15th, at 8 p.m. at the Saugatuck Elementary School auditorium in Westport, CT. There is no admission charge; the performance is one of 58 free shows presented by the Friends of the Levitt Pavilion this summer.

With warmth and charm, mentalist Joshua Kane leads audiences through a dazzling demonstration of the powers of the mind.

Like Professor X of legend, Kane identifies those in the audience with special abilities who will successfully project their own thoughts and tap the powers of their intuition. An amazing, interactive performance where the entire audience experiences simultaneous telepathy and witnesses dazzling feats of lie detection and what must be psychic phenomena. People of all ages leap to participate in the Strange Happenings at the Borders of the Mind.

Can he read your mind? or is it mastery of reading body language that allows Kane to distinguish liars from truth-tellers? Or perhaps it’s the same craft for which witches were burnt at the stake. with the popularity of current television shows such as The Mentalist and Lie To Me, Kane's performance could not be more timely.

A classically trained actor, Kane has studied with Stella Adler, Bobby Lewis, the National Shakespeare Conservatory & Marcel Marceau. A member of Actors Equity Association, Kane has toured internationally with a series of one-man shows and played limited runs at off-Broadway’s historic Lambs Theatre and the Neighborhood Playhouse. In his unique one-man shows, Kane brilliantly blends the power and dramatic sweep of solo theatre with the ancient art of storytelling, creating compelling and provocative performances.

Jeff Grow's Creating Illusion at undergroundzero Festival

New York based magician Jeff Grow is back with his show "Creating Illusion" as part of the undergroundzero Festival. The show begins on Saturday, July 17th here in New York City.

Recipient of the 2009 Innovative Theatre Awards:
Outstanding Solo Performer & Outstanding Performance Art Production.

Seeing is believing - but perception can be manipulated for beauty or deception. Magician Jeff Grow takes you on a journey where elegant sleight of hand and insight into human behavior collide to dismantle everyday experience and tempts us to question: Why do we choose to believe the unbelievable?

Grow is an appealing technician who brings a boyish charm to a group willing to be fooled. Grow is adept at slowing down his motions, conning us into thinking we will see how he does the trick as he explains it. There are audible "ahs" when we don't, and again he's got us in the palm of his hand. Aside from the smooth illusions, I most enjoyed Grow's explanations ofhow a con works, painting familiar New York street scenes and populating them with cons he has met and been conned by. This is the best of his patter, and it proves sharp and illuminating.” -NY Theatre.com

The undergroundzero festival is an experimental theater festival/laboratory/flying repertory conceived by Paul Bargetto and produced by East River Commedia. Founded in 2007, the undergroundzero festival gives producing artists a platform where risk-taking and innovation are both encouraged and expected. Artists are invited to bring a production of their choosing to join a flying repertory dedicated to radical play and experimentation. It may be a new work or a past production that deserves another life – whatever best serves the individual or collective artists growth and agenda. This year the undergroundzero festival presents over twenty New York City and European experimental theatre companies and artists at the legendary downtown performance venue Performance Space 122, July 6-25.

Jason Escape: Bound To Amaze

Jason Escape (Jason Gardner) visited the shop yesterday and hung with the staff along with his friend NYC magician Magic Brian. Jason is getting married in a few weeks. Congratulations!

Getting tied in endless amounts of rope and chain, escaping from tiny locked boxes, and suspending himself upside-down while high in the air in a straightjacket are but a few of the many talents of Jason Escape. Everything he does is designed to make you laugh, if not freak you right out. His live performances never fail to render his audiences truly awestruck.

Growing up right outside of NYC afforded Jason the opportunity to see many of the great modern magicians, such as David Copperfield, Doug Henning and Penn & Teller. Jason's grandfather would take him to see these awesome magicians, and after would present him with a simple magic trick to learn. Jason studied and practiced constantly. Magic and escape required not only manual dexterity but a challenge to his mind as well. Jason spent his days bound by rope to chairs, making objects vanish, and even reading his cat's mind.

Now as an adult, his passion has never waned; it's even matured and grown. He shares his art and has brought smiles, laughter, thrills and amazement to audiences all over the world.

Jason Escape is currently a performer part of the street theater program at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston, MA.

Magic in the Park at Joe's Pub

Magic in the Park is a magical journey and entertainment showcase that pays homage to the late Dr. Abraham B. Hurwitz, New York City’s “Official Magician”. Continuing in the tradition of his legendary “Peter Pan the Magic Man” shows, Magic in the Park features magic and mental acts, juggling, ventriloquism, puppetry, music, and much more.

Hurwitz was a Yeshiva University education professor who was so deft and admired at his magic act that he was named New York City's "official magician" by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

Dr. Hurwitz was a city recreation director when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia gave him the official magician title during the Depression. For 18 years, he took his magic show to schools and recreation centers and put on annual magic shows in parks in every borough. For years after he left the department he continued his magic shows as a volunteer. Among his proteges was his daughter, Shari Lewis, the world famous ventriloquist and developer of Lamb Chop.

Abe Hurwitz was born in Lithuania in 1906. He graduated from City College of New York, got his master's degree from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in educational guidance from New York University. He began mixing magic with teaching as a guidance counselor at the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphanage. He retired from Yeshiva in 1974. He died September 29, 1981.

The New York Times, in 1981, wrote that Hurwitz “entertained more than a million young people” at free performances in New York City’s schools, parks, recreation centers and playgrounds.

Performing in these family-friendly, 70 minute shows are:

May 2 –
Emcee “Cajun Cellist” Sean Grissom
Funny Guy, Magician and Plate Spinner Robert Baxt
Magician David Boyd (Tannen's Magic Camper)

Colbert Report: Health Care Magic

Stephen Colbert performs magic tricks such as the classic Cups and Balls, flash paper, and the Vanishing Ketchup Bottle to show how the Democrats are trying to pass health care reform.

The Colbert Report is a spin-off from and counterpart to The Daily Show that comments on politics and the media in a similar way. It satirizes conservative personality-driven political pundit programs, particularly Fox News' and The O'Reilly Factor. The show focuses on a fictional anchorman character named Stephen Colbert, played by his real-life namesake. The character, described by Colbert as a "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot", is a caricature of televised political pundits.

Larry Willmore had a comedy bit on The Daily Show With John Stewart last year (see blog here) stopped at our store to get some new magic tricks. He said "The Daily Show's magic is far better than the The Colbert Report". Let the battle begin.

No Rabbit in a Hat, but Steve Cohen Has Magic Up His Sleeve

By N. R. Kleinfield
Published: March 3, 2010

Steve Cohen, who directs his sleight of hand and other tricks for the upper crust, performs as the Millionaires’ Magician.

In the article from this past Sunday's New York Times, Steve talks about his career and his start at Tannen's Magic Camp as well as a recent visit to the shop.

"For four summers, starting when he was 12, he attended Tannen’s Magic Camp on Long Island. A fellow camper was David Blaine and his counselor was Johnny Ace Palmer, a skilled close-up magician. While in high school, Mr. Cohen got $20 an hour to walk around doing magic at a local restaurant."

Two Primo Italian Magicians

This week at our store in New York City we had a visit by two famous Italians magicians Andrew Basso and Alessandro Politi. Both stopped by and did some serious shopping before heading out to the World Magic Seminar starting this Sunday in Las Vegas.

The WMS is the premier convention for both professional and amateur magicians sponsored by world famous magicians Siegfried and Roy. The WMS began 32 years ago as the Desert Magic Seminar and is held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to the seminar, Lance Burton hosts a special week-end event is held for teen magicians.

Andrew Basso, 24, is from Trento, Italy is considered "One of the younger and most successful escape artist in the world".

Engaged in over 120 live shows every year, Andrew is currently leading the Italian television programme "Street Magic" where he puts his abilities to the test, in real settings, "on the road", improvising with the public his incredible magic and illusion experiments and his breathtaking escapes.

Andrew has already accomplished dozens of stunts, including:
THE COFFIN OF DEATH: Andrew has only seconds to free himself from a coffin with explosives before a car drives into it at 80 mile per hour.
THE UNDERWATER CELL: Andrew is chained and locked in a cell that is lowered underwater and has to hold his breath and escape before drowning.
ESCAPE AT 40 METERS HEIGHT: hanging head-down from a crane, 130 feet away from the ground, bound in a real straight-jacket, Andrew performed this air escape in record time!

Alessandro Politi, 33, from Savignano sul Rubicon, Italy is a comedian, cabaret artist and actor. He was named Italian Magician and Comic of the Year in 2006.

He is most famous for his portrayal of a weird Scottish magician Martin Scozzese, that calls himself the "Grande Mago" (Big Magician).  Alessandro holds the Guinness Book of World Record for the greatest number of  magic tricks presented underwater for an audience. Check out this hysterical video.

James Galea Down Under

James Galea is Australia's number one magician. Constant television and radio appearances and his own series for the Nine Network (Urban Magic) have seen James in constant demand not only in his home country but internationally both in the corporate arena and as a headliner world-wide, performing at the Flamingo Las Vegas and Hollywood's legendary Magic Castle.James Galea is vastly different to the stereotypical 'pull a rabbit out of a hat' magician - he breathes new life into the dying art of magic and trades the traditional rigid tuxedo and stiff top hat for a pair of sneakers, jeans and a tee shirt. Energetic and effortlessly cool, James presents the art of magic with a wicked sense of humour disarming audiences with his youthful charm and astonishing them with his talent.

James started learning magic at age 14 from someone he thought was a magician. He later found out that his mentor moonlighted as a professional con man who cheated in high stakes poker games. While his colleagues were learning how to make hankies disappear from old magic books Galea learnt how to deal aces from the bottom of the deck from a professional card shark.

It was in the field of close up magic that James' unique talent was discovered. His charismatic performances soon attracted notice and at just 19 years of age, James was awarded 'Australia's Best Close-Up Magician'.

In 2009 after sell-out seasons Australia-wide of his live show I HATE RABBITS, James took to the stage as an actor starring in LYING CHEATING BASTARD, a play he co-wrote about Australia's most successful conman. The critics were unanimous in their praise for the play and Galea's performance and the show will now tour internationally throughout 2010/2011. Galea is currently in development for several TV shows in the US and Australia.

Take a look at his version of Sam the Bellhop by Bill Malone The 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala.
